Inspiration for this proposal was taken from the complex interwoven network of train lines and stations across the country. The result is a web of connections that at first, appears chaotic before revealing the intricate precision of the rail network. Sydney Trains are responsible for the rapid movement of data, information and people across the city, the state and the country.
This translation of both physical and nonphysical components requires communication, organisation and intelligence working in synchronicity, just like birds flying in formation. The intervention is a geometrically complex, sculptural form which is suggestive of the same intelligent organisation of information and objects through time and space. For over 160 years, the Sydney Trains network has played a critical role in the provision of transport services for New South Wales and further afield across Australia.
Not only has the network enabled the connection of millions of people across the country, but the construction, maintenance and day-to-day running of the Sydney Train service has employed people from all backgrounds for almost two centuries. This intervention is testament to the importance and incomprehensible scale of the rail network across Australia.
