A collaboration between City People, Studio Chris Fox and Emma Saunders

Wanna Dance was an interactive art installation commissioned by the City of Sydney for Sydney Solstice 2021, created in response to a city re-emerging from COVID lockdowns during a period when dancing in public had, for a long time, been banned.

Three oversized, brightly coloured exhaust vents were mounted off the rear facade of a heritage building on Parker Lane at the corner of Hay Street in Haymarket. Sensor-activated lights and sound drew passers-by in closer — stepping under a vent triggered a swirl of light and music, turning a service laneway into an open dance floor. "A service laneway in Haymarket is transformed with a series of hybrid objects, the whimsical re-invention of three industrial vents into performative dance hoods," said Chris Fox. "This project is a playful opportunity for people to dance in public again."

The soundtrack, curated by Tyson Koh (Loose Joints, FBi Radio), moved through 70s disco, 90s House, C-Pop, K-Pop, African Amapiano, Arabic pop and 80s classics. Six nights of live dance performances were curated by Emma Saunders, with performances by Feras Shaheen and Friends, Yee-Li Tee and The Westies Crew, C+ Dance Studio and We Are Here.

The installation ran daily from 3pm–midnight, with evening performances across two weekends. Entry was free.

Supported by the City of Sydney and the NSW Government.
