Timeflows – A Journey Through Deep Time

Timeflows is a public artwork on Dharug Country that explores Ngurra through deep time—connecting geological formation, cultural continuity, and contemporary experience. Developed by artists Michael Cohen, Chris Fox, and Shay Tobin in collaboration with Dharug community participants, the work considers how ancient landscapes—such as nearby Angus Creek and the uplift of the Lapstone Structural Complex—coexist with present-day pathways, infrastructure, and urban life.

Drawing on geological and topographic datasets from the Cumberland Plain and broader Sydney Basin, the project uses computational modelling to generate sculptural forms that appear to emerge from the earth. Each form speaks to a different temporal layer, referencing sedimentation, landform change, and long-term First Nations inhabitation spanning tens of thousands of years.

Moving through the work, visitors encounter a sequence of structures that reflect both transformation and continuity—acknowledging Dharug knowledge, deep time histories, and ongoing connection to Country.

“How do we consider the emergence of the ancient nearby Angus Creek, with the creation of local pathways, motorways and homes in the same breath?” — Shay Tobin
